Charles Ungerleider

Charles is Directions’ Managing Partner and Director of Research. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia and his previous positions include: Deputy Minister of Education for British Columbia, Vancouver School Board Trustee, and Associate Dean of Education at UBC. Charles provides project oversight and quality assurance for all Directions projects, and provides methodological and content area expertise based on his decades of experience in both academic and public policy realms. Charles’ book on public education in Canada, Failing Our Kids: How We Are Ruining Our Public Schools, makes a compelling case for public schooling as a key ingredient for a civil and effective society. Charles believes strongly in evidence and that it is difficult to maintain one’s integrity if one is unwilling to use that evidence to speak truth to power. Charles is a frequent traveller and takes pride in avoiding outdoor pursuits wherever he goes.
